A Short Introduction & Why I Started This Business

It’s said that how you spend your days is how you live your life. I love that idea and I think it also applies this way: where you spend your days is where you spend your life.

Our surroundings have a huge impact on us; not just what we see, but how spaces feel and how we interact with them. Our environment shapes how we think, behave, and feel more than most people realise. Interior design is so important yet it often feels out of reach, either reserved for the wealthy or dismissed as superficial. I started Matthew Emery Interior Design to change that.

“A well-planned space can influence how you focus, relax, and connect with the world. That doesn’t have to mean expensive furniture or grand architecture, ordinary homes and businesses can be a joy when they’re designed with purpose.”

I’ve been obsessed with design from a young age. My favourite book was the IKEA catalogue. My bedroom never stayed in the same layout for more than a week, and when my parents took me to Toys R Us, I was more excited looking up and following the ventilation system than I was by the toys. It’s surprising then that my journey into interior design wasn’t straightforward. I’ve always had a technical side and once planned to be an engineer or a pilot in the RAF. My curiosity for how things are built and how they work has shaped the way I design today. I love solving problems, understanding how people use space, and turning creative ideas into something practical.

Starting the business has been both exciting and uncomfortable in the best way. Every week brings something new to learn, from refining my process to understanding what clients really need from me. I’ve realised that people want more than great design, they need guidance that gives them confidence. People often have great instincts; they just need help trusting them and turning those instincts into a plan that makes sense.

This journal is a place for me to share whatever I’m thinking about: design ideas, business thoughts, or the odd behind-the-scenes moment. Some posts will be useful, some more reflective, and some just me figuring things out as I go (which I enjoy most).

If you’re curious about design, or you’re planning your own project, I hope you’ll follow along.
